These birds are very high on my list of birds that I love to photograph. I especially love the patterns in their wings when they all fly together. These images are all from Bombay Hook NWR in Smyrna, Delaware which is one of my favorite places to photograph birds.

Even when they aren’t flying, you can get some really cool patterns. In the next three shots, there were several Peregrine Falcons keeping them on their toes this particular day…

I don’t normally photograph birds when they’re facing away but I really liked the way they looked when they were all on alert like this because of a Bald Eagle flying overhead.

When I’ve photographed the avocets in the past, they’ve not been in their breeding plumage with the rust color on their heads and necks. Also this past May is the first time that I’ve been lucky enough to see them doing any of their courtship rituals! After they finish mating, they do a very romantic type of strut, for lack of a better word.

Now…if only they would have their kids in this area! Unfortunately they head out west to do that. One of these days I think I may have to take a trip out that way!

  1. Bill S. Said,

The courtship photos are breathtaking. Since I have never had the experience to witness that behavior in the field, I thank you for sharing. Quite the passionate couple!

  2. Swannie Said,

I really loved your avocet photos, especially the ones looking away from the camera. But my favorite is the one of the pair crossing their heads! Keep up the good work!
